Getting Started with Woodwind Lessons
The following instruments are classified as woodwinds.
Flute (and piccolo)
Clarinet (and bass clarinet)
Saxophone (soprano sax, alto sax- most common, tenor sax- second most
common, and baritone sax)
Oboe
Bassoon
Age to start lessons:
The earlier a child can be exposed to music, the better! Music has so many benefits
beyond music education! Music increases math, reading, spatial skills, and SAT scores. It teaches commitment, organization, self discipline, positive social skills and increases a child's self esteem!
The following is an average age recommendation for Woodwind Instruments. The
perfect age to begin lessons is ultimately dependant on the individual child. Some
students find success at beginning lessons at a much earlier age than normally
recommended. Other students benefit from waiting until an older age to start lessons.
8-9 years old and up
Due to the size and weight of the instruments and the required breath support and lung capacity, it is best to start at 8-9 years old and up.
What do I need to start lessons?
Please consult your music teacher for specific requirements.
Instrument and case
Many retail stores will offer both rental and purchase options. A rental option is
beneficial to test out a student's interest and ability on that particular instrument. Many
stores will allow you to switch to a different instrument if the original is not a good fit.
There are also student models for many of the band instruments. Ask your local music store for more details.
Cleaning and maintenance kit
Extra reeds
Ask your teacher or music store representative which brand and strength reed is
best for the student. A beginner student will use a different brand and strength
than an advanced player.
Music stand
Lesson books and materials
Your lesson books and materials will be selected by your teacher. Your teacher will
either purchase the materials for you (please reimburse your teacher directly) or they will give you the information so you can purchase them.
Lesson log
A lesson log keeps track of your assignments, the concepts covered at each lesson, and your practice time. Your teacher may have a specific lesson log they would like you to use.
Pencils
Make sure to have plenty of erasers too!

Metronome
A metronome plays a beep or tone at the tempo requested. It is a very valuable tool for teaching and establishing rhythm.
Electronic tuner
Woodwind recordings
It is very inspiring to hear what years of practice can sound like!!
